Since 1977, the OpenAir St. Gallen has been an inimitable member of the European festival scene: its location in a nature reserve close to the city, its always up-to-date musical line-up, and its faithful audience make it an exceptional festival.

Four days of music, freedom, and celebration with over 60 live acts and 40 DJs on five different stages – all in front of a unique backdrop in the Sittertobel. Every year, a small temporary town is constructed in the unspoiled countryside. The ambiance is truly legendary.

This project I created as a freelancer in collaboration with Die Gestalter AG.

Briefing

The Openair St.Gallen wanted to use animation to further move their brand and visual appearance. One step towards that goal was to animate their logo. It needed to be something recognizable and efficiently usable across social media, presentations and media applications. This animation was created separately from the year 2023's design. Its purpose is, to be re-useable - independent of the yearly changing design concepts.

Process and challenges

The static design was the iconic bird in the round star logo. Conceptually, it was clear to me from the start, that the bird had to come to life. In the future, the clip would be played before line-up releases or video-impressions of the festival. That's why I wanted the animation to be lively, still short - similar to the brand introductions you  see in the cinema, before the shows starts. Simple yet noticeable.

Briefing

Once a year, the Openair St.Gallen announces the Line-Up of the Openair St.Gallen at a press conference. It is introduced through a 6 and a half minutes long video, consisting of a logo-animation of the OASG logo of the next year, short sequences from 8 to 12 seconds long videos showing music videos and live appearances of the artists, playing the stages at the Openair.

In the end, they needed a press conference video (6 min), a web video (short version with only headliners, as seen in the first video at the top of this page), E-Panel and E-Board (with only the graphic Line-Up) and a Reel for Social Media (also a short version with headliners only).

Process and challenges

The client partially told me, which videos they wanted to be in the video. A big chunk of content searched for in past performances of the artists and edited the chosen video sequences together, so their pace would fit well.
